According to the Census 2016, which recorded the types of housing that the Australian population reside in show that separate houses remain the most popular across the capital cities: Sydney (56.9%), Melbourne (67.8%), Brisbane (76.4%), Perth (76.9%) and Adelaide (74.8%).
Accordingly, the percentage of people living in flats or apartments is highest in Sydney (28%) due to limited land supply and growing population, followed by Melbourne (14.7%), Brisbane (12.6%), Perth (7.8%) and Adelaide (6.6%).
The majority of newly built dwellings in Sydney and Melbourne are units and apartments, and it’s forecasted that this trend will continue due to strong population growth, whereas the majority of people in Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide will more likely live in separate houses or semi-detached dwellings with the context of slower population growth.
