In a recent article, we explored the diverse business verticals at Milk Chocolate, which range from planning, purchasing, construction and management, to artificial intelligence, software development and digital design.

Construction is Milk Chocolate’s newest addition. The vertical is led by our National Head of Construction, Kieran Moore, who launched his career around seventeen years ago from humble beginnings as an apprentice carpenter. After moving up through the ranks into on-site roles and eventually management, and working on numerous prestigious homes and commercial landmarks across Sydney, he shifted gears and joined us – a proptech company – in March this year.

In the months since, Kieran has grown our construction vertical into a full-blown operation. He and his team are now managing over 20 projects that range from cosmetic and structural renovations all the way to sub-divisions and new home builds. Highlights include a prestige house build in Hunters Hill, a cosmetic renovation in Fairlight that will see updates to flooring, wet area floors, joinery and landscaping; a reconfiguration of a unit in Bondi Beach that will transform it from a one-bedder into two with an added courtyard; three sub-division projects in Brisbane; and a period residence in Ballarat featuring a complete internal strip and rear extension that will turn it into a four-bedroom, two-bathroom home.

“I love that every project is different and challenging in its own right, and I love being able to work with great trades and deliver projects for clients and investors,” says Kieran.

It was Kieran’s hunger and passion for the industry that initially drew us to recruiting him, but his dedication to taking construction beyond its conventional parameters that have truly impressed us. He and his team work closely with our other verticals to create efficiencies and deliver an excellent end result for our clients.

When it comes to collaborating with our economists, real estate and property management teams, Kieran uses their expertise to optimise construction costs and ensure the project meets our clients’ needs. Using accurate figures gleaned from our economists’ findings, Kieran is able to gain a clear understanding of what and where the client can build. He also joins forces with our design team – made up of our Interior Design Coordinator and a community of external architects and designers – who generate the plans for each of our projects before Kieran realises them.

“[The Milk Chocolate] team works together on almost every project or brief that comes through the company,” he says. “We make sure from a numbers point of view that we are ticking all boxes, from the suburb, location and interior design to the end dollar value of the proposed construction plans. We look after everything along the way – we are truly an end-to-end service.”

Particularly where tech is concerned, traditional construction is set to undergo a massive shift. While still in the early stages of development, we’re looking at ways our more future-focused verticals can enhance the work done by Kieran and his team. Machine learning, for example, has the potential to use image recognition to assess construction sites and track progress, or predictive models to generate cost predictions and project timelines.

A perennial evolver, Kieran is taking it all in his stride: “I am really excited about where Milk Chocolate is taking the company and integrating the tech side of things with the construction arm. We are going to be able to provide a great experience for both clients and our suppliers.”

With $15 million of construction work underway and an exciting project pipeline set to launch in the new year, much like Kieran we can’t wait to see where this vertical goes in 2021 and beyond.
